CT Kids Back Pack Program Expands to Norwalk

You might be surprised to learn that there are many children in Bridgeport and Norwalk who are hungry when they arrive at school on Monday morning. To respond to this problem, the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County and the CT Food Bank are expanding the CT Kids Back Pack Program to two elementary schools in Norwalk. This program operates in more than 50 schools statewide and distributed about 30,000 Back Packs full of nutritious meals this year.

Food insecurity, malnutrition and hunger are chronic in the lives of many children in our communities. Children who rely on the school breakfast and lunch programs during the week, are often faced without sufficient food over the weekend, leading to a lack of focus and energy on Monday morning.

8,155 Bridgeport children lived in families receiving food stamps during June 2007. More than one in three of these children were under the age of six. As many as one in two eligible families does not receive food stamps.    (State of the Child in Bridgeport 2008, BCAC)
