Community Response Small Grants Program Keeps Kids Smiling

United Way's Community Response Small Grants Program provided funding to AHEC, Southwestern Area Health Education Center, for the Give Kids a Smile Program, an American Dental Association-endorsed program.  AHEC through the Oral Health Bridgeport Initiative has coordinated a successful program each year since 2007 through which more than 1,000 Bridgeport and Stratford children have received donated dental services from 75-80 total dentists that have participated one or more of the 4 years of the program.  In 2010, 449 children have been seen by 63 dentists and

GE Volunteers support School of Hope

A group of GE Volunteers got together to brighten up the entranceway to Geraldine Johnson School with flowers and mulch.  While at the school, they also had an opportunity to read to the children.  Dr. Jim Crispino of United Way talked to the volunteers about Schools of Hope and why United Way supports this program.  It was a great show of community support by GE.  Perhaps Marlene Roberts, principal of Geraldine Johnson, put it best...... 

Wi-mentor's Community Service Project at Beardsley Zoo

April 24, 2010:  76 Wi-mentor mentees, mentors, and their family and friends, volunteered their time on a beautiful Saturday morning at Beardsley Zoo.  The volunteers helped by raking, landscaping, wash tables, spread mulch, pruning, transplanting, and much more. This project was made possible with the help and dedication of Ms. Sharon Bryce.  She is a mentor, volunteer; and proud GE colleague; who helped Wi-mentor plan and coordinate the Wi-mentor's 2010 Community Service Project that was sponsored by GE. Thank you GE!

ESOL Family Night at Stratford High School, April 8, 2010

On Thursday, April 8, 2010 Stratford High School (English as a second or other language learners) teacher, Ms. Linda Chehy hosted an ESOL Family Night and invited Wi-mentors as their special guests.

Wi-mentor students and friends joined us at the Stags in January!

Earlier this year, Wi-mentor students from Stratford High School and their family members joined the United Way at the arena in Bridgeport for a Fairfield Stags basketball game. They were excited to pose for a few pictures demonstrating that they LIVE UNITED! (Nick Yakur, Samuel Andresil, Malin Olofsson, Marc Charles Morquette, Axel De Jesus and Eric Martinez).

Cooperative Educational Services and Linda Page, Director of its School Readiness Program, honored United Way and 5 other organizations and individuals today with its first annual Success Through Educational Partnerships Award at the Regional Center for the Arts High School in Trumbull.  We are proud of our partnership with C.E.S. and are glad that our work in providing preschool students and their families with children’s books and literacy workshops to promote reading and literacy in the classroom and at home is making a difference in the C.E.S.

Junior Achievement Thanks United Way!

Thanks to United Way for a grant of $3,000 , 3 classes at Bullard Havens School - approximately 75 students - will participate in Junior Achievements Success Skills economic education programs this year.  Those students will be taking an important step in developing strategies and skills needed to achieve lifelong learning pursuits and career opportunities!  With the current economic enviroment, it is more important than ever that our next generation be financially literate. 

United Way Increases Support for Child FIRST

United Way is proud to support Child FIRST, a program that we originally funded for the Bridgeport community, and that has now expanded to communities across Connecticut. The Hour's staff writer, Chase Wright reported on March 24th about the program.

"In Norwalk, the Child Guidance Center of Mid-Fairfield County will lead the program in collaboration with the Family & Children's Agency and the Norwalk Community Health Center."
