Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

United Way of Coastal Fairfield County (UWCFC) is focused on helping kids succeed, building strong families, promoting self-sufficiency and strengthening our community.  We believe a key ingredient to success in these areas is helping working families stabilize their finances.

UWCFC has developed a partnership with the Connecticut Association for Human Services (CAHS), an organization that for the past several years has offered free tax preparation assistance to low-income, working families, a program called “VITA,” which stands for “Volunteer Income Tax Assistance.”  This free service provides tax preparation assistance, and in many cases, teaches them about special tax credits for which they may qualify, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

There are thousands of families who do not know that they qualify for the EITC.  In addition to the ten VITA sites throughout the Greater Bridgeport area and three in the Norwalk area, United Way is bringing this resource to more individuals in the area through our “Mobile VITA” program.  This program was piloted at three area companies last year.  United Way will be bringing this program to more companies during the coming year’s tax season.
